The United States, like Canada, must deal with a tradeoff between its climate change objectives and ensuring energy security for itself and its strategic European partners. In its weekly podcast on American politics (Checks and Balance) the Economist magazine examines the US alternatives in responding to the energy impacts of the crisis in Europe involving Russia and Ukraine. The US, and to a lesser extent Canada, have some ability to offset any reduction in Russian oil and gas deliveries to Europe that might occur because of an attempt by Russia to punish those countries for their support of Ukraine.
