Matthew Tam

Chair

Matthew is currently an Assistant Plant Officer at Ontario Power Generation with the Renewable Generation business unit servicing the Niagara region. As part of the Plant Engineering Services department, he responsible for providing technical guidance on the performance and maintenance of hydroelectric generating stations for their continued safe and efficient operation.

Prior to joining OPG in 2017, Matthew was a product design engineer for several startups and consultancy firms within the clean technology (Cleantech) industry (i.e. hydrogen and natural gas powered vehicles) and who specialize in the advancement of Internet of Things (IoT), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and satellite communication. He hopes to find opportunities to apply this knowledge to his everyday work to improve critical equipment monitoring, diagnostic and predictive maintenance.

Matthew holds a B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with a Management Sciences option from the University of Waterloo and is bilingual in French and English.

Brianne McMullen

Vice Chair Communication, Marketing, and Social Media Strategies

Indigenous Engagement Coordinator, Black & McDonald Limited

Brianne McMullen holds a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree from Trent University where she double majored in Environmental Science and Biology.

Recently Brianne accepted a new opportunity with Black & McDonald’s Power Generation Region team as their Indigenous Engagement Coordinator. In this role Brianne will lead advancement of Indigenous employment, business development, and community relationships.

Additionally, Brianne is passionate about the health of the global environment and loves being outdoors. Previously Brianne worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) at Voyageur Provincial Park to eradicate the invasive European Water Chestnut (Trapa natans).

In her most recent role Brianne was the Events Manager and Policy Advisor for the Ontario Waterpower Association where she led management of events, such as the Power of Water Canada Conference and Trade Show – the largest hydroelectric conference in Canada. She also supported the Association on a number of high priority policy initiatives related to environmental files.

Brianne is a Member of the Snimikobi Algonquin First Nation and is currently participating in an Omaamiiwinimowin language class where she hopes to be able to retain and eventually teach others what she learns. 

As Vice-Chair of the YEPN, Brianne is looking forward to advancing and building on the work that has been achieved by the previous YEPN executive council.

Harshivam Bawa

Executive Member Outreach & Engagement

Communications Officer with the Canadian Gas Association

A former journalist turned communicator, Harshivam works for the Canadian Gas Association as a communications officer. In his current role, he focuses on media relations, advocacy, community engagement, and content creation. Previously, Harshivam worked as a freelance journalist in India and briefly in London, ON before he moved on to work for London Economic Development Corporation as a communications and marketing assistant. Harshivam holds a bachelor’s in journalism and communications from Guru Nanak Dev University in India and professional post graduate diplomas in Broadcast Journalism – Television News and Public Relations – Corporate Communications from Fanshawe College in London, ON. Harshivam is also on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Business Communicators – Canada East Region. In his free time, he enjoys watching Formula 1 and Football, and he enjoys playing tennis, flag football, softball, and golf.

Opeyemi Owolabi

Senior Thermal Specialist with Hatch

 Ope is currently working with the power business unit at Hatch as a senior thermal specialist. He has worked in the energy industry for over 10 years with experience spanning from different sector to include oil and gas, steel mills, biomass plant and power generation plants. Ope has designed power plants in various countries across, North America, Europe, and Africa. 

Prior to joining Hatch, Ope worked with General Electric as a customer solutions engineer. In this role, Ope was responsible for developing different thermal power plant solutions for various applications. Ope also worked with Energy performance services, an energy management consulting based out of Quebec, Canada as an Energy Manager. In this role, Ope was responsible for identify and developing energy management plans for industrial and commercial facilities. Ope was responsible for delivering the Strategic energy management program (SEM) across North America.

Ope holds a Bachelor and Master of Engineering in mechanical engineering.

Mark Zanewick

Executive Member: Network & Mentorship Program

Senior Economist with the Alberta Market Surveillance Administrator

Mark Zanewick is an energy policy and regulatory professional, with 10 years of experience in public roles at the provincial and federal levels. Currently, as a Senior Economist with the Market Surveillance Administrator, he is focused on overseeing the fair, efficient, and competitive operation of Alberta’s electricity sector. While with the Canada Energy Regulator, Mark assessed the economic and financial components of federally regulated oil and gas pipeline infrastructure and tolling frameworks and participated in major regulatory hearings. 

Prior to regulatory roles, Mark focused on policy issues within the Government of Alberta. As Manager of Economic Policy, he led the development of the framework to establish the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation and developed policy to stimulate economic growth and diversification in multiple economic sectors. With the Department of Energy, he led the policy evaluation of Alberta’s energy-only electricity market structure and provided advice related to renewable energy development, coal-generation retirement, and carbon pricing.

Mark holds a Master of Earth and Energy Resources Leadership from Queen’s University, as well as a B.A. in Energy Economics and B.A. in Canadian Studies from the University of Calgary. In addition to being a lifelong Calgary Flames supporter, he spent four years in various managing roles with the non-profit organization AIESEC, which facilitates the development of youth leadership through its international work placement programs.
