A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
Nobody said this would be easy

The winter of 1872-3 was a difficult one for Montrealers. An early freeze made the river and canal reaching the city impassable. City dwellers were without an adequate supply of wood and prices of the existing supply crept out of reach of the city’s poor as winter began. After two young child victims of the cold were discovered, emergency measures were implemented. The Canadian Illustrated News reported that:
the generous farmers of the parish of St. Jerome, under the leadership of the good Father Labelle, brought into town a great number of loads of wood to be given free to the poor under the direction of the several Charitable organizations in the city.
One hundred and fifty years ago, in a country with plentiful sources of wood, energy availability and affordability were not certain. They continue to be concerns for consumers, especially in the context of a rapid energy transition at the same time that energy demand is growing.
The World Bank released a study that included a glimpse of the main sources of energy since 1800 up to 2020. Biomass and coal have been present from the beginning. In 1800, they are the only sources. Oil appears in 1870, followed by natural gas and renewables in 1890. Finally, nuclear energy is measured from 1970.
In 2020, renewables and nuclear – the lowest GHG emission sources – were responsible for 11.5% and 5.0%, respectively, of energy consumption. By 2050 the Bank projects shares of 36.9% for renewables and 7.2% for nuclear. The chart (left) is a graphic display of the energy transitions we have already gone through. It shows a steady growth in renewables from 1890 to 2020. From 2020 to 2050 world population is expected to rise from 7.8 billion to 9.7 billion – a 24% increase. To achieve a 36.9% share by 2050, renewables’ share of energy production must expand at an unprecedented pace over 30 years. The challenge is daunting.
Perhaps the lesson we should draw is that we face difficult trade-offs to come close to the desired low-emission outcome we’re aiming for, but we should not despair that it can’t be done. There appears to be a public consensus to produce and use energy such that we significantly reduce the associated emissions of greenhouse gases. But we cannot “assume away” uncomfortable truths or ignore the nature and scale of what needs to be done. It does not serve our interests to dismiss approaches as unworthy of research and development simply because they are not our favourites. All approaches are tentative at this point. We will enjoy no progress by “making the perfect the enemy of the good”. Nor should we question the good faith of those who advocate options we have rejected.
It is in that spirit that we are inviting members of the energy sector to contribute to the 2024 edition of the Canada’s Energy Story (CES 2024) We want your views on the energy transition; how it affects your organization; how you are responding to the challenges.
On September 24, 2024, we sent a message to our contact list to submit an article proposal for CES 2024. For more details, see below in ECC ACTIVITIES.
ECC ACTIVITIES
Energy Association Presidents Tour CO2 Direct air Capture Facility
Carbon Engineering hosted the presidents of the Energy Council of Canada (ECC) and the United States Energy Association (USEA) for a tour of its Direct Air Capture (DAC) carbon-capture test facility in British Columbia. Jacob Irving (ECC) and Mark Menezes (USEA) spent the day touring the facility and in information sessions with the project’s team.
Carbon Engineering has been developing DAC technology for over a decade. Its Innovation Centre is in British Columbia in Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh). The Centre has established proof of concept for DAC. The Innovation Centre has an engineered capacity to capture approximately 1,000 tonnes of carbon annually.
The company’s technology will be used in a commercial-scale facility under construction in Texas by 1PointFive. That plant will capture up to 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The commercial plant is in an advantageous geological area. The CO2 will be sequestered in subsurface formations.
The Carbon Engineering design satisfies several important environmental and commercial requirements. It is a closed-loop design, allowing materials to be re-used to minimize costs. Elements of the capture system are modular, which permits efficient mass manufacturing of components. The standard design is scalable. And finally, the process output is a pure CO2 stream that can be measured by conventional equipment.
A breakthrough in this technology could have a profound effect on carbon removals for energy users and, possibly, enable reductions of past accumulations.
ECC Supports GAC Trade Commissioners’ Efforts to Support Canadian Businesses
The third quarter of the year saw the Energy Council of Canada supporting an average of 2 initiatives per month from the Trade Commissioner Service. The Trade Commission service in Kingston, Jamaica made the most requests for support. ECC used its extensive contact list to re-send information about activity and business opportunities in the Caribbean to interested parties in Canada.
We sent messages concerning:
- Contract opportunities for work on the cruise liner port in New Providence in the Bahamas.
- Business opportunities to construct 5 renewable energy projects (wind and solar) in Egypt.
- Calls for bids from the governments of the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas for the development of independent power production facilities (Bahamas) and policy and strategic planning (Cayman Islands).
- Invitation for Canadian companies to join a trade mission to Indonesia and the Philippines.
- Call for a professional regulatory analyst for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
- Invitation to join a GAC mission to a Caribbean Renewable Energy Conference.
Report Card on ECC Work with Trade Commissioners
The Energy Council of Canada uses broadcast emails to communicate information to its more than 8,000 contacts. From the beginning of 2024 to mid-September we have sent 29 messages providing information, announcing business opportunities, and inviting participation in conferences. The Energy Council works with Global Affairs Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service to distribute important information on opportunities for Canadian companies to develop international business opportunities. This can include business missions to other countries, conference invitations, and, especially, contracting opportunities.
We have monitored the effectiveness of this communication channel and been encouraged by its success. The average range of readers of the messages is from approximately 2,200 to 3,400. The highest readership was over 4,800 for a message in early September that invited participation in a government-sponsored business mission.
The table (above) indicates that on average the highest responses are to messages inviting readers to conferences and advising of business opportunities in overseas markets. The two largest responses have been for opportunities in Jamaica (4,683 readers) and Egypt (4,556 readers).
Our experience in working with the Trade Commissioners – although limited at this time – persuades us that there is considerable additional potential to use this medium to support Canadian energy businesses in finding international opportunities.
ECC Takes Part in Roundtable Information Session with Trade Commissioners Promoting Canadian Cleantech in the US
On 3 October, 2024 Energy Council of Canada President, Jacob Irving, and Chief Consultant, David McGrath, participated in an information session with Canada’s trade commissioners based in the U.S. who specialize in cleantech opportunities.
Canada has over 120 trade commissioners who have mandates to connect Canadian businesses in the cleantech sector with opportunities in North America and overseas. The Canadian energy sector boasts some of the most advanced clean technologies available. We informed the participants of the support we can provide through our considerable energy sector network, support we have already supplied in several markets served by the Trade Commissioner Service.
ECC Accepting Submissions for This Year's "Canada's Energy Story"
Each year the Energy Council of Canada publishes on line a collection of articles submitted by Council members and other participants in the energy sector that address a theme. This year we are accepting submissions that deal with energy transition.
If you want to contribute to Canada’s Energy Story, please complete a submission form. Once both the form and article have been submitted, the relevant information will be transferred to the document’s design template. ECC will send each contributor a formatted draft of their article to make final edits before publication.
The process is as follows:
- Complete the submission form.
- The form asks for the article’s title and a preliminary 150-word abstract. Please send that as soon as possible.
The completed article submission should comprise these elements:
- Word file (docx).
- Maximum 1,800 words
- High-resolution logo file
- High-resolution images and graphics (at your discretion)
- Please email that to ECC by 30 November.
We plan to post the finished document on the Energy Council of Canada website in the first week of January.

ATCO Energy Systems files Application with AUC for Yellowhead Mainline gas pipeline
ATCO Energy Systems, a subsidiary of ATCO Ltd., has filed an application with the Alberta Utilities Commission for the construction of a $2.8 billion pipeline from the Edson area of Alberta to northeast Edmonton. The line is expected to be 200 – 230 km in length, depending on the route that is chosen and approved. It will be capable of shipping 1.1 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. ATCO Energy Systems estimates that, with regulatory approval, the company could begin construction in 2026 with an on-stream target of the 4th quarter of 2027. BOE Report
LNG Canada Terminal Now Receiving Gas
On 20 September, the CEO of LNG Canada announced that the export terminal is now receiving gas. Energy Now
The company will carry out a series of flaring activities for the purpose of ensuring the facility’s safe operation. The company expects the first export shipment in mid-2025. Offshore Energy
Siemens Energy Canada and University of Toronto Engineering Joint Research in Fuel-flex Propulsion & Power Generation
Siemens Energy Canada is working with the University of Toronto Engineering Department to research the use of low or zero emission fuels for propulsion and power generation. The objective of this stage of research is to understand the differences in combustion between natural gas and hydrogen. With this understanding, researchers hope to develop design principles that can be applied to the later development of engines. University of Toronto Engineering News
Federal Support for Hitachi HVDC Centre
Hitachi Energy Canada has received $30 million from the federal government to support the establishment of a new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) simulation centre in Montreal. A portion of the funds will also be directed to upgrade its power transformer factory in Varennes, Quebec.
HVDC technology enables the integration of large scale renewable electricity into power grids. The new simulation centre in Montreal will support large transmission projects by allowing virtual testing of HVDC systems before installation. It is expected that both domestic and international developers will make use of the facility to help design their projects. The new simulation centre is expected to be completed before the end of 2027. Global Energy
Steve Dorey
The Energy Council of Canada regrets to inform members of the passing of Steve Dorey. Steve was a great supporter of the Energy Council of Canada for many years. He was an Energy Council Director, representing Hydro One. He was also the first Chair of the Energy Council’s Studies Committee.
Steve Dorey graduated from the University of Waterloo. He then pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Manitoba and later taught Economics at the University of Regina. Following that, he joined the Ontario Provincial Government where he spent several years as Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance and Chief Economist. Later, he was appointed Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning at Hydro One.
Steve passed away suddenly at home on September 17th. There will be a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, October 16 from 2-4 pm at the White Rock Lawn Bowling Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated by the family.
The Energy Council of Canada members wish to extend their condolences to the Dorey family. Steve was an enthusiastic, highly-valued colleague and contributor to the Council.
