On 5 April the government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that it was ending its moratorium on onshore wind energy projects. The moratorium has been in place since 2007. One spokesperson from the industry estimated that the province has 40% of Canada’s as yet undeveloped potential. Given that the province accounts for only 1% of consumption, the prospects for electricity exports are attractive. Some in the industry consider wind energy development an opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador to diversify its economy.
