The federal Impact Assessment Agency is currently examining a proposal to build a 600 MW electricity generation facility capable of being fuelled by natural gas or hydrogen. The plant would be built 15 km south of Sarnia.
A plant of that size falls under the Environmental Assessment Act, although it might not have to undergo an environmental assessment. At this stage of the process, the proponents have submitted an Initial Project Description and the Environmental Assessment Agency has posted that document online. The Agency has called for comments from the public. The result of that consultation will be a decision whether to conduct an environmental assessment. If there is to be an assessment, the Agency will have used the consultation to compile a list of issues the assessment should consider.
Comments will be accepted up until midnight on 13 July 2022.
