CEU 2025

In the afternoon of 6 February 2025, the Energy Council of Canada held its annual half-day, review and forecast conference, Canada Energy Update. The event brought together 7 commentators from industry associations, energy companies, and academia. Over 60 people registered to attend the conference and participate in the discussion.

The presentations reviewed the recent history of the energy sector and looked ahead to 2025 and beyond. A number of important influences are expected to come to bear on the Canadian energy sector in both the near-term and long-term future.

Among the issues raised during the afternoon were:

• The expected dramatic increase in energy demand from existing and, especially, new sources.
• The continuing electrification of the Canadian economy.
• The resulting requirement for a significant energy infrastructure expansion in the country.
  • Are Canadian regulatory systems adequately coordinated, resourced, and designed to provide the timely decisions necessary for investors and project developers to determine the commercial viability of their projects?
  • Can the energy sector attract the capital necessary to meet the anticipated demand?
  • How are we preparing for the generational shift in human resources and expertise necessary to meet the security, reliability, and affordability expectations of Canadian consumers?
  • What will be necessary to meet the existential changes in export markets?
