The Energy Council of Canada invites you to join us for an interesting package of four energy-related events on May 8, 9 and 10 in Regina and vicinity. The line-up includes:

  • A workshop partnered with Natural Resources Canada.
  • Our event on Multiple Pathways to Clean Energy: Canada’s Western Provinces.
  • Presentations on two carbon management initiatives.
  • A site visit to the world’s first fully-integrated carbon capture and storage project.

Workshop Partnered with Natural Resources Canada  |  May 8

The Energy Council of Canada is pleased to announce that we are partnering with Natural Resources Canada to hold a working session on Canada’s long-term energy future. This workshop will be an important opportunity to have your voice heard by the federal government on Canada’s generational energy challenges and opportunities.

Energy Council of Canada Event—Multiple Pathways to Clean Energy: Canada’s Western Provinces  |  May 8 and 9

To advance the dialogue on the emerging energy-related opportunities and issues related to the transformation to clean energy, the Energy Council of Canada, together with its member organizations from the public and private sector across the region, has developed this conference on the theme Multiple Pathways to Clean Energy: Canada’s Western Provinces. The goals of the conference are: to profile the policies and initiatives underway, to better understand the “lessons learned” and the issues in play, and to find promising pathways towards achieving each jurisdiction’s goals.

Three broad topics will be covered, two pertaining to individual jurisdictions, and one involving an emerging regional   opportunity.

  • Transformation of electricity generation: The diversity of the strategies and actions in each jurisdiction which are greening the generation mix will be discussed by the first panel.
  • Climate Policy: Each province has implemented climate policies matched to the characteristics of their energy sector and to their policy design preferences. Issues to be aired are the track record to date of emissions reductions, the impact on energy prices, the interplay between provincial and national policies, and the outlook for carbon policy in the future.
  • Regional collaboration to build a western Canada electricity grid: The opportunity agenda will be described and discussion will focus on developing the idea of a regional grid further, including supply and demand synergies, investments required, the implications for market operation and regulation, and the critical path ahead.

Keynote speakers will include the Honourable Scott Moe, Minister of the Environment, Government of Saskatchewan, at the Opening Reception on May 8.

Ms. Kim Rudd, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources Canada will present the Keynote Luncheon Address on May 9.
An energy ministers panel, chaired by Deborah Yedlin, Calgary Herald, will open the program on May 9. The session chairs will be Mike Marsh, President and CEO, SaskPower, Martha Hall Findlay, President, Canada West Foundation, and Kelvin Shepherd, President and CEO, Manitoba Hydro.

Briefings – Carbon Capture and Storage Initiatives  |  May 9

Carbon capture and storage is a leading technology to reduce GHG emissions from the use of fossil fuels for power generation and in industrial operations.

Participants in the Energy Council’s event are invited to attend briefings on two important CCS initiatives underway in Saskatchewan:

  • CCS Knowledge Centre
  • Aquistore Project

Visit to Boundary Dam Plant: Carbon Capture and Storage Project |  May 10, 2017

Through the development of the world’s first and largest commercial-scale CCS project of its kind, SaskPower is making a viable environmental and economic case for the continued use of coal resources in an environmentally-sound manner. Completed in 2014, the Boundary Dam Carbon Capture Project has transformed the aging Unit #3 at Boundary Dam Power Station near Estevan, Saskatchewan into a reliable, long-term producer of 120 megawatts (MW) of base-load electricity.

This technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to one million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year. That’s equivalent to taking more than 250,000 cars off Saskatchewan roads annually.

Carbon Capture and Storage Knowledge Centre

The Centre’s mission is to help accelerate the development and application of CCS, which has been identified as essential in the global effort to reduce greenhouse emissions. The work undertaken at the centre will help bring down the costs of CCS technology, assist in the management of development risk, and promote greater information sharing around the world. Partners in the Centre are BHP Billiton and SaskPower.

Aquistore Project

The Aquistore Project, led by the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, is the most comprehensive full-scale geological field laboratory for CO2 storage in the world. With leading edge technology, the Aquistore Project is demonstrating the safe, reliable and economic advantages of injecting captured CO2 into a 3400m deep saltwater-infused sandstone.
The Project provides opportunities in capacity building through innovative research, training and education to global partners. Industry and government partners in Japan, Korea, Australia, the United States, South Africa and the United Kingdom are participants in the project.
